OSHA regulation 29 CFR 1910.133 requires that not only workers using striking tools, but also those working in the immediate area, wear safety glasses. Similar requirements are found in the OSHA construction regulation 29 CFR 1926.102. The Mine Safety and Health Administration mandates eye protection in mining environments under 30 CFR 55.14-4, 30 CFR 56.15-4, 30 CFR 57.15-4, 30 CFR 75.1720(a), and 30 CFR 77.1710(a).
Always use the right tool for the job, and proper tool use is essential.
- Never strike one hammer or striking tool against another tool or a hardened object.
- Always avoid glancing blows and overstrikes or understrikes.
- When striking another tool (chisel, punch, wedge, etc.), the face of the proper hammer should be approximately 3/8" larger in diameter than the surface being struck.
- Always use a hammer of the correct size and weight for the specific job.
If any damage is visible on the tool, it should no longer be used.
