Svabite, Manganoan calcite (UV) in Galena; Erongo, Namibia – 1 kg
This 1 kg lot contains hand-selected raw pieces from the renowned Erongo region in Namibia, combining several striking mineral phases. The dominant matrix consists of massive, grey-black galena with metallic luster. Fracture surfaces and vein fillings are coated with whitish to pale pink manganoan calcite, which fluoresces vividly in orange to pink tones under UV light. Particularly rare is the occurrence of svabite – a calcium arsenate mineral – found as light crusts or partial coatings within the same material.
The combination of lead-rich galena, UV-active manganoan calcite, and the rare svabite mineral makes this lot both visually appealing and mineralogically significant. Under shortwave UV, many pieces exhibit strong fluorescence, making them especially attractive for collectors of fluorescent minerals.
Geology & Origin
The Erongo region in central Namibia is famous for its pegmatite fields and polymetallic mineralization. Galena commonly occurs in association with other sulfides and secondary minerals in this area. Manganoan calcite, a manganese-rich variety of calcite, forms as crusts or vein fillings and is highly sought after for its fluorescent properties under UV light.
Svabite is a rare calcium arsenate that typically forms in the oxidation zones of arsenic-bearing ore deposits. Its occurrence in the Erongo district is noteworthy, as svabite is globally documented at only a few known localities. These hand-picked samples are ideal for collectors of fluorescent or rare secondary minerals.
