This rare Struvite specimen from Watenbüttel near Braunschweig displays light-colored, fibrous aggregates with a typically needle-like structure. Crystal formation is irregular but clearly visible, developing along cavities in the matrix. The beige-gray coloration gives the piece a subtle, natural aesthetic, making it a fascinating example of secondary mineral formation in anthropogenic environments.
Geology & Origin:
Struvite (magnesium ammonium phosphate) is a typical secondary mineral formed under special conditions in sewage treatment plants, fertilizer facilities, or phosphate-rich sediments. The occurrence in Watenbüttel is one of the few known localities in Germany where macroscopic crystals can be found. Such specimens are mineralogically significant, as they document the interplay of biological and chemical processes.
