Smoky Quartz from Madagascar. One unique specimen with approx. 5.28 kg.

This large smoky quartz specimen from Madagascar weighs approximately 5.28 kg and displays a predominantly light smoky-grey to brownish-grey coloration with areas ranging from transparent to translucent. The natural fracture surfaces produce a glassy luster and reveal the internal structure of the quartz particularly well. Darker smoky-brown to almost black areas are especially visible toward the lower part of the specimen, creating a pronounced contrast with the lighter zones. Its substantial size, changing transparency and irregular natural form make it particularly suitable as a large display specimen. The exact specimen shown in the pictures is offered for sale.

Geology & Origin

Smoky quartz is a naturally colored variety of quartz. Its grey to brown coloration develops through natural ionizing radiation within the surrounding rock, which, together with trace elements—especially aluminium—creates color centers in the crystal lattice. The intensity of the coloration can vary considerably within a single specimen, ranging from only slightly tinted quartz to very dark smoky quartz. Madagascar is well known for extensive quartz occurrences, particularly in pegmatitic and hydrothermal geological environments. These settings can produce massive quartz bodies and large crystal aggregates that frequently show distinct color zoning and varying degrees of transparency.

Usage Notes

Fossil wood with opal is ideal as a collector's specimen, decorative display piece or educational example. Clean with a soft, dry or slightly damp cloth. Avoid strong impacts and harsh cleaning agents to help preserve the specimen.
