Selenite; Morocco; 26 kg; unique piece
Selenite from Morocco –26 kg unique piece
This impressive single specimen of Selenite from Morocco weighs 26 kg and displays the typical elongated fibrous structure of this mineral in a particularly massive development. The large crystal mass consists of parallel growing silky crystal fibers extending across the entire specimen, clearly showing the characteristic linear texture of the mineral.
The surface appears slightly translucent and shows the typical silky to vitreous luster of Selenite. The pronounced growth structures create numerous fine light reflections along the crystal fibers. Its massive size together with the clearly visible crystal structure makes this specimen a very decorative collector’s piece and an excellent example of large crystalline Selenite from the well known Moroccan deposits.
Geology & Origin
Selenite is a clear to translucent variety of the mineral Gypsum (calcium sulfate dihydrate). It typically forms in evaporitic deposits when sulfate rich solutions evaporate in arid climates. Under such conditions Gypsum often crystallizes in elongated, fibrous or tabular crystals.
Morocco is one of the most important sources worldwide for large Selenite crystals. In sedimentary basins of the region, slow crystallization in sulfate rich solutions can produce very large and well developed crystal aggregates such as the specimen shown here.
