This large white specimen from Midelt, Morocco displays a striking column-like form with a pronounced longitudinal structure. Depending on the lighting, the surface shows a silky to slightly vitreous luster and the typical fibrous to compact appearance associated with Gypsum and Selenite. Due to its size and bright, nearly monochromatic appearance, the specimen is particularly suitable as an impressive collector’s or display piece. The terms Selenite and Alabaster are used for different varieties of Gypsum and here describe the characteristic light-colored, compact to fibrous nature of the material.

Geology & Origin

Gypsum is a hydrated calcium sulfate that commonly forms in evaporite deposits through the evaporation of mineral-rich waters. Selenite refers to especially clear, crystalline to fibrous varieties of Gypsum, while Alabaster describes a fine-grained, compact variety. The Midelt region of Morocco is known for numerous mineral occurrences and produces attractive Gypsum and Selenite specimens. The material is relatively soft and should be kept dry and protected from impacts and prolonged contact with water.
