Pyrite xls, "Iron Cross" twins on matrix from Extertal in Lippe, Germany. One micromount specimen.
This micromount specimen features well-visible pyrite crystals on matrix, ranging from octahedral to cubic in shape. Particularly striking is a characteristic penetration twin of the “Iron Cross” type, which is typical for the classic locality of Extertal in North Rhine-Westphalia. The pyrite surfaces show a brownish-golden to matte appearance due to natural oxidation, but the crystals are generally well-preserved and clearly developed.
Geology & Origin
The Iron Cross twins from Extertal are among the classic pyrite specimens from northwestern Germany. They form as penetration twins along {111} faces of cubic pyrite crystals. The matrix is usually composed of clay-rich to sandy rock in which the crystals are embedded. Such pieces often come from historic quarries or temporary outcrops that are no longer accessible today.
This table is for general information and orientation, although the sizes of the stones may vary. In addition, this specification is handled differently from region to region.
