Pyrite xls, "Iron Cross" twins; Extertal, Lippe, Germany; 1 unique lot
Pyrite xls, "Iron Cross" twins from Extertal in Lippe, Germany. 1 unique lot.
This lot contains numerous well-preserved pyrite crystals showing classic octahedral, cuboctahedral and cubic growth forms. A special highlight are the multiple contact twins of the "Iron Cross" type, which are well developed and sharp-edged. The crystals are up to thumbnail size and show metallic to dull surfaces in varying shades of bronze, brown and gold, resulting from natural oxidation processes. All pieces are matrix-free and selected for their aesthetic and typological consistency.
Geology & Origin
"Iron Cross" twins from Extertal are textbook examples of pyrite penetration twins, formed along the {111} planes of the isometric system. They are among the most characteristic collector’s items from northwestern Germany. The locality is known for producing sharp, well-formed crystals in historic exposures, although such finds have become increasingly rare due to limited access and natural overgrowth of old sites.
