This lot comprises 1 kg of opalized fossil wood from Nevada, USA. The pieces show a variety of sizes and shapes, displaying the characteristic layered and fibrous structures typical of this material. Coloration is dominated by light cream to beige tones, locally accompanied by brownish or slightly yellowish areas. On several specimens, original wood textures remain clearly visible, making the fossil origin easy to recognize. The surfaces are mostly matte to slightly silky, while fresh fracture faces provide insight into the internal structure. Under shortwave UV light (SWUV), parts of the material exhibit a distinct green fluorescence, adding further scientific and collector interest.
Geology & Origin
Opalized wood forms through the complete or partial replacement of organic wood tissue by silica during fossilization. In Nevada, this process is commonly associated with volcanically influenced sedimentary environments, where silica-rich fluids permeated the plant material over extended periods of time. The observed UV fluorescence is caused by activating trace elements within the opaline silica structure, a feature known from certain occurrences in this region. Nevada is considered a classic locality for fossil wood in various states of preservation, ranging from chalcedonic to opaline replacement.
