This lot consists of 1 kg of Obsidian from Armenia offered as smaller pieces. The material displays the typical glassy fracture surfaces of Obsidian, with black transparent areas as well as silvery shimmering zones that become visible depending on the angle of light. The pieces are left in their natural, rough condition and show the characteristic conchoidal fracture of volcanic glass.
The selection includes irregularly shaped, smaller raw pieces that are well suited as reference and collecting material. Due to natural fragmentation, the individual pieces vary in size, shape, and degree of transparency, resulting in a visually diverse lot. This material is ideal for mineral collections, educational purposes, comparative studies of volcanic glass, or decorative applications.
Geology & Origin
Obsidian is a volcanic glass formed by the rapid cooling of silica-rich lava. In Armenia, Obsidian occurs in connection with relatively young volcanic activity and is known for its dark varieties, often showing transparent areas and metallic-looking silver sheen. The absence of a crystalline structure and the conchoidal fracture are characteristic features of this natural glass.
