Obsidian "Apache Tears"; Arizona, USA – 100 g
This 100 g selection contains several rounded, deep black obsidian nuggets from Arizona (USA), commonly known as “Apache Tears.” Their glossy, glassy appearance and drop- to oval-like shapes are characteristic, formed naturally through weathering processes from obsidian lava. The surface ranges from matte to glossy – the shine is especially enhanced when wet or polished.
Perfect for mineral collections, decorative purposes, or further processing such as tumbling, cutting, or polishing. Due to their distinctive form and legendary name, these obsidian types are also popular in jewelry and metaphysical applications.
Geology & Origin
“Apache Tears” are a variety of volcanic obsidian – an amorphous volcanic glass that forms when lava cools rapidly without crystal formation. Their rounded, nugget-like shapes develop over time through erosion, smoothing the originally sharp edges of obsidian fragments.
The name comes from a Native American legend, in which the stones are said to have formed from the tears of grieving Apache women. The most important localities are found in the southwestern United States, especially in Arizona and Nevada. This material originates from the classic deposits near Superior, Arizona, known for producing well-formed, high-quality obsidian.
