Obsidian "Apache Tears" on matrix; Arizona, USA – 1 kg
This 1 kg rough material from Arizona (USA) features black obsidian spheres embedded in a light-colored matrix. These so-called "Apache Tears" are volcanic glass droplets preserved here in their original host rock. The striking contrast between the deep black, glassy obsidian and the matte surrounding stone makes each piece visually unique.
A fascinating material for collectors as well as for lapidary work – ideal for exposing, cutting or polishing the obsidian nodules. Even in raw form, it represents a powerful piece of volcanic geologic history.
Geology & Origin
Apache Tears are rounded varieties of obsidian, a natural volcanic glass formed from rapidly cooled lava flows. In gas-rich zones of such flows, small, glossy glass droplets can form and later become encased in host rock – typically perlite or altered volcanic tuff.
Specimens like this are commonly found near Superior and Globe in Arizona – a classic region for matrix-based Apache Tear occurrences. According to Native American tradition, these black glass spheres represent tears of mourning, making them both a collector's item and a stone rich in symbolic meaning.
