Geology & Origin

The Kaulsberg Quarry near Ortenberg is one of the well known zeolite localities in Hesse. The minerals formed within cavities of volcanic rocks when mineral rich solutions entered vesicles and fractures, allowing crystals to develop. Analcime commonly forms characteristic light colored crystal aggregates, while Natrolite is known for its fine to radiating crystal growth. The locality has long been valued by collectors for its diverse zeolite mineralization.
