Geology & Origin
Mina Ojuela near Mapimí in the state of Durango is one of the classic Mexican localities for minerals from the oxidation zone of polymetallic ore deposits. Weathering of primary lead, zinc, copper and arsenic-bearing ores allowed numerous secondary minerals to form there. These include Smithsonite, a zinc carbonate, and Adamite, a zinc arsenate. Both minerals can occur in a wide range of colors and crystal habits and are among the characteristic collector minerals of the locality. Changing chemical conditions within the deposit resulted in the great diversity of carbonates, arsenates and other oxidation-zone minerals for which Mina Ojuela is well known.
