Duftite; Musquiz, Coahuela, Mexico; 15,35 kg; unique piece
Duftite from Mexico – 15.35 kg unique piece
This large Duftite from Mexico, weighing 15.35 kg, displays extensive blue-green to turquoise coatings on a lighter, earthy matrix. The surface is predominantly matte to slightly silky and characterized by irregular, widespread aggregates. No distinct, well-formed crystals are developed; instead, the Duftite forms dense, crust-like mineral layers that give the specimen its characteristic coloration and strong visual presence. Due to its size and color intensity, this unique piece is particularly well suited as a display specimen or a prominent addition to a mineral collection.
Geology & Origin
Duftite is a rare secondary lead copper arsenate that forms in the oxidation zones of lead and copper deposits. It typically develops through the alteration of primary ore minerals under oxidizing conditions and commonly occurs alongside other arsenates and copper minerals. Mexico is well known for its diverse and mineralogically rich oxidation zones, where Duftite often appears as massive to crust-like aggregates. Specimens of this size are comparatively uncommon and provide an impressive illustration of secondary mineral formation processes in arsenate-rich environments.
