Descloizite crystals from Los Lamentos, Mexico, Gerd Tremmel collection – micromount as unique piece

This micromount shows Descloizite crystals from Los Lamentos, Mexico, from the Gerd Tremmel collection. The dark reddish brown to almost black crystals occur in dense aggregates and irregularly cover the matrix. Their predominantly short prismatic to blocky habit creates a finely granular, sparkling surface with a metallic to resinous luster. Subtle color variations between deep brown red and dark violet define the compact appearance and give the specimen a calm and cohesive overall impression.

Geology & Origin

Los Lamentos is a classic locality for oxidized vanadium minerals in Mexico and forms part of a complex hydrothermal ore system. Descloizite formed in the oxidation zone of vanadium rich lead zinc deposits, where circulating fluids under oxygen rich conditions led to the precipitation of secondary vanadates. The locality is well known for finely developed, intensely colored Descloizite crystals, especially documented in older collector material.
