Philipsbornite crystals from the Grandview Mine, Grand Canyon, AZ, USA –  miniature specimen

This miniature specimen shows Philipsbornite crystals from the Grandview Mine, Grand Canyon, Arizona, USA. The surface is covered with intensely lemon yellow to ochre yellow crystal aggregates developed in crust like, finely porous structures. The crystals form dense, relief like coatings with a granular texture and a matte to slightly silky surface. Occasional darker inclusions appear between the yellow areas and create subtle contrasts. The cohesive coloration and compact development give the specimen a clear and distinctive appearance.

Geology & Origin

The Grandview Mine in the Grand Canyon area is an important locality for secondary arsenates within oxidized copper deposits. Philipsbornite forms here in the oxidation zone through the reaction of lead bearing solutions with arsenic rich components under strongly oxidizing conditions. The complex geochemical processes within the sandstone sequences of the Colorado Plateau led to the formation of numerous intensely colored secondary minerals characteristic of this locality.
