Parnauite crystals from the Grandview Mine, Grand Canyon, AZ, USA – miniature specimen
This miniature specimen shows Parnauite crystals from the Grandview Mine, Grand Canyon, Arizona, USA. The surface is covered with intensely green to blue green crystal aggregates distributed irregularly on a reddish brown matrix. The crystals form fine grained, crust like structures with a lively relief and differentiated texture. Between the green areas, earthy copper oxide rich zones appear and create a strong color contrast. The interplay of vivid green and warm brown to red tones gives the specimen a clearly structured overall appearance.
Geology & Origin
The Grandview Mine at the Grand Canyon is an important locality for secondary copper and uranium minerals within sedimentary rock sequences. Parnauite forms here in the oxidation zone through the reaction of copper bearing solutions with arsenic and sulfate components under strongly oxidizing conditions. The complex geochemical processes within the sandstone sequences of the Colorado Plateau led to the development of numerous intensely colored secondary minerals characteristic of this locality.
