Afwillite and Ettringite crystals from Bellerberg, Eifel, Germany – micromount as unique piece
This micromount shows a fine paragenesis of Afwillite and Ettringite. The whitish to transparent crystals are small but well visible and stand out against the compact matrix. Afwillite is a rare calcium silicate hydrate, while Ettringite is known as a calcium sulfate aluminate hydrate. Both minerals often occur in highly metamorphosed limestones as well as in basaltic cavities of the Eifel.
The Bellerberg locality in the Eifel is considered a classic site for a wide variety of rare calcium silicates and sulfates. Formed in a volcanic environment, these mineral parageneses provide valuable insight into the complex processes of contact metamorphism.
