Abernathyite crystals from Lodève, Hérault, France – micromount as unique piece
This specimen shows tiny greenish Abernathyite crystals finely scattered on the matrix. The crystals are microscopic in size but clearly recognizable by their distinct color and slight luster. The contrast between the green crystals and the brownish matrix highlights the character of this rare uranium mineral.
The piece comes from Lodève in the Hérault Department, France, a well-known locality for uranium minerals. Abernathyite is a very rare nickel uranyl arsenate crystallizing in the tetragonal system. It usually forms minute crystals in yellowish to greenish colors, often in association with other secondary uranium minerals. Due to its rarity and typical appearance, Abernathyite in micromount size is a valued collector’s mineral, particularly important for specialized mineral collections.
