Azurite xls from Kyffhäuser, Thuringia, Germany – 1 Flat as a Unique Lot

The flat contains several Azurite specimens from the Kyffhäuser region in Thuringia, Germany, showing differently developed blue Azurite xls on pale to ochre-coloured matrix. The crystals occur partly as broader coatings and partly as fine granular to crust-like aggregates, with colours ranging from intense dark blue to blue-green depending on the individual specimen. The varied shapes, surface textures and distribution of the Azurite make this flat a diverse selection of characteristic material from the locality. This is a uniquely assembled flat and therefore a one-of-a-kind lot.

Geology & Origin

Azurite is a secondary copper mineral that typically forms in the oxidation zone of copper-bearing deposits. At the Kyffhäuser locality in Thuringia, such copper minerals developed through the alteration of primary copper compounds under the influence of oxygen-rich near-surface solutions. Azurite may occur together with other secondary copper minerals and forms characteristic blue coatings, aggregates and crystals on the surrounding rock.
