This large unique specimen from South Africa weighs 11.95 kg and displays the pronounced banding characteristic of Sunset Jasper, also known as Mugglestone. Intense shades of red, rust, brown, and ochre alternate in numerous fine to broader layers, creating a very lively and partly wavy pattern. Particularly striking are the strong orange and dark brown bands, which contrast clearly with the red base areas. The natural fracture surfaces and varying layer orientations reveal the internal structure of the rock especially well and give each side of the specimen a different appearance. Due to its considerable weight and extensive visible banding, this specimen is especially suitable as a prominent display piece.
Geology & Origin
Mugglestone, or Sunset Jasper, is a South African trade name for strongly banded, iron-rich siliceous rocks that are commonly marketed as Jasper because of their intense red, brown, and yellowish colors. The characteristic coloration is mainly caused by different iron oxides and other iron-bearing minerals. The fine parallel to wavy layers reflect changing depositional and mineralization conditions in which silica-rich material and iron compounds accumulated during several phases. Later consolidation and geological alteration produced the compact, distinctly banded rock seen today. South Africa is known for a variety of iron-rich banded rock formations from which numerous decorative Jasper varieties originate. The specimen offered here is the unique piece shown, weighing 11.95 kg.
