This exceptionally large unique Jasper specimen from Indonesia weighs 22.55 kg and displays a striking predominantly red to reddish-brown coloration. Particularly noticeable is the vivid banded pattern with lighter beige to cream-colored areas and clearly visible Quartz veins running through the specimen in irregular lines. In places, these features form flowing and curved structures that give the rock a highly varied appearance. The surface shows both compact red sections and more strongly banded zones with different shades and fine contrasts. Due to its size, considerable weight, and pronounced natural patterning, the specimen is especially suitable as a striking display piece for larger collections or presentations.
Geology & Origin
Jasper is a dense, fine-grained variety of Quartz composed mainly of microcrystalline silica. Its red coloration is typically caused by finely dispersed iron oxides, while the lighter Quartz veins represent later mineral-rich fluids that penetrated fractures and cracks in the rock and deposited Quartz within them. The banded and swirling structures may reflect several phases of deposition, alteration, and later tectonic deformation. Indonesia has numerous silica-rich rock occurrences related to its complex volcanic and tectonic history. The interaction of silica, iron minerals, and later Quartz-filled fractures can produce particularly contrasting Jasper formations in this region. The specimen offered here is the unique piece shown, weighing 22.55 kg.
