Massive unique jade specimen from the Bering Sea region near Nome, Alaska, weighing 9.68 kg. The piece displays predominantly dark gray to gray-green coloration with a fine, dense-looking texture and lighter mineral markings. Several surfaces have been partially ground, making the texture, color, and internal structure of the material more visible, while other areas retain their natural surface. Its considerable weight and compact, block-like shape make it suitable both as a large display specimen and for closer examination of the raw material.

Geology & Origin

Jade is a general term used for exceptionally tough, fine-grained rocks that may consist mainly of Jadeite or Nephrite. Nephrite typically forms through metamorphic processes in which calcium- and magnesium-rich rocks are altered under elevated pressure and comparatively low temperatures. Alaska contains numerous occurrences of jade-bearing rocks associated with complex tectonic and metamorphic environments. The area around Nome on the Bering Sea is characterized by varied metamorphic rock units as well as a long history of erosion and redistribution of geological material. This specimen originates from this region and is offered as the unique piece shown.
