Hyalite, UV-active (SW); Zacatecas, Mexico; 1 flat
This flat contains fluorescent Hyalite specimens from Zacatecas, Mexico. The pieces exhibit botryoidal to knobby surfaces and show a strong green fluorescence under shortwave UV light. The intensity of the glow varies depending on composition and purity, resulting in a visually diverse collection. In daylight, colors range from milky white to faint bluish hues. The crystal structure is not sharply developed but appears waxy and glassy in texture.
This selection is ideal for UV-themed collections, fluorescent display cases, or mineral assortments with a focus on optical effects. The pictured flat shows a representative sample of the material offered.
Geology & Origin
Hyalite is a water-rich variety of opal (Opal-AN) that forms in cavities of volcanic rocks through the slow precipitation of amorphous silica from silica-saturated fluids at low temperatures. The deposits in Zacatecas are well-known for their vivid fluorescence under shortwave UV light, which is caused by trace elements or organic inclusions incorporated during formation.
