This flat contains a selection of Gypsum crystals in various sizes from Zimmersrode near Borken in Hesse, Germany. The specimens predominantly show transparent to translucent, colourless to slightly brownish crystals with tabular to elongated forms. Some pieces consist of intergrown crystal groups, while others occur as individual, distinctly formed crystals. The different sizes and shapes create a varied selection of material from this German locality. 

Geology & Origin

Zimmersrode is located near Borken in northern Hesse, a region with sedimentary deposits in which Gypsum may occur. Gypsum commonly forms through the precipitation of sulfate-rich solutions in evaporitic sediments or through later alteration processes within suitable rock layers. Under favourable conditions, well-developed transparent to translucent crystals can form, such as those characteristic of the specimens offered in these flats.
