Fossilized (petrified) wood; red, multicolored; Posey Mine, Utah, USA; 1 kg
This vividly colored material comes from the Posey Mine in the U.S. state of Utah, a well-known locality for petrified wood with exceptional red coloration. The pieces exhibit intense shades ranging from deep red to reddish-brown, sometimes with darker matrix areas. The original structure of the fossil wood is partly still visible, adding a unique visual appeal. Perfect for collectors, decorative use, or lapidary work.
Geology & Origin
The Posey Mine is located in southern Utah and is part of a broader region famous for its abundant deposits of fossilized wood. The petrified wood originates mainly from the Late Triassic Chinle Formation and was preserved through the gradual replacement of organic material by silica-rich solutions over millions of years. The striking red coloration is caused by iron-bearing minerals such as hematite introduced during fossilization.
