Fossilized (petrified) wood - Opal; Garut, Java, Indonesia; 74,25 kg; unique piece
Fossilized (petrified) wood from Garut, Java, Indonesia – 74.25 kg unique piece, totally opalized.
This exceptional 74.25 kg piece of fossilized wood from Garut, Java, Indonesia, impresses with its monumental presence and the striking contrast between the light, strongly weathered matrix and the compact silicified sections. Particularly remarkable are the dark olive-green to grey-green, glassy translucent zones in the upper area, clearly standing out against the pale base material. Parts of the original trunk structure remain distinctly recognizable, giving the specimen a powerful, sculptural character. The mineralized areas display a dense, chalcedony-like development with smooth, naturally polished surfaces. An impressive large-scale piece with strong form and visual impact.
Geology & Origin
Fossilized wood forms when organic plant material is permeated and preserved by mineral-rich solutions over very long geological timescales. During this process, the original wood substance is gradually replaced by quartz and related silicates, while the internal structure of the wood remains intact. The Garut region on Java is well known for producing large-format, vividly colored fossilized wood characterized by stable preservation, clear structures, and expressive natural color zoning.
