Petrified Wood from Indonesia. One unique specimen with approx. 9.84 kg.
This exceptionally large specimen of petrified wood from Indonesia weighs approximately 9.84 kg and displays the original structure of the former tree trunk in an impressive way. Particularly striking are the strongly textured surface, the longitudinal wood structures and the numerous natural cavities and depressions. Former growth and fiber structures can still be recognized in several areas, while the beige to grey-brown coloration emphasizes the sculptural relief of the specimen. Its substantial size and clearly preserved wood features give the piece a distinctive and highly three-dimensional appearance. The exact specimen shown in the pictures is offered for sale.
Geology & Origin
Petrified wood forms when dead wood is rapidly buried by sediment and largely isolated from oxygen. Mineral-rich groundwater can then penetrate the original woody tissue. Over very long periods of time, the organic material is gradually replaced or impregnated and preserved by quartz. This process can retain even fine details of the former wood structure although most of the original organic matter has disappeared. Indonesia is well known for important occurrences of silicified wood associated with volcanically influenced sediments and silica-rich groundwater. Large specimens such as this one illustrate particularly well the transformation of a once living tree trunk into a fully mineralized fossil.
Usage Notes
Fossil wood with opal is ideal as a collector's specimen, decorative display piece or educational example. Clean with a soft, dry or slightly damp cloth. Avoid strong impacts and harsh cleaning agents to help preserve the specimen.
