Fossil (petrified) wood with opal from Garut, Java, Indonesia; Single piece with approx. 5.4 kg.
This remarkable fossil wood was mineralised over millions of years by opal-bearing solutions, preserving the original wood structure in impressive detail. Depending on the specimen, fine wood grain, natural colour variations and areas of opal in shades of brown, beige, grey, green and cream may be visible. The combination of fossilised wood texture and opalised sections makes each piece a unique collector's specimen and an attractive natural display item.
Geology & Origin
Petrified wood forms when buried trees are gradually replaced by minerals carried in groundwater over millions of years. In the Garut region of Java, Indonesia, volcanic activity and silica-rich solutions led to the formation of opalised fossil wood. During this process, the characteristic structure of the original wood was largely preserved while being replaced or enriched by opal. As a result of natural variations in structure, colour and mineralisation, every specimen is unique.
Usage Notes
Fossil wood with opal is ideal as a collector's specimen, decorative display piece or educational example. Clean with a soft, dry or slightly damp cloth. Avoid strong impacts and harsh cleaning agents to help preserve the specimen.
