This 1 kg lot contains rough pieces of fossil wood preserved through opalisation and chalcedony inclusions. The material displays greenish to brownish hues with distinct wood texture, partly interlaced with fine chalcedony veins. The unique combination of fossil structure and silica mineralisation makes these specimens attractive for collectors as well as for lapidary work. One of the photos displays a cut sample, illustrating the patterns that can be achieved.
Geology & Origin
The material comes from the Indonesian island of Java, well known for its diverse volcanic deposits. Fossil wood forms when organic material is buried in sediments or volcanic ash and permeated by mineral-rich solutions. In this process, the original wood structures are replaced by silicate minerals such as chalcedony and opal, preserving cell patterns and growth structures in remarkable detail. Opalised wood from Java is highly valued for its vivid color variations and striking textures, making it a sought-after material for both collectors and lapidary use.
