Erythrite crystals from Bou Azzer, Morocco, Gerd Tremmel collection –  small cabinet specimen as unique piece

 

Erythrite crystals on this cabinet specimen occur as striking pink to deep carmine-red, acicular crystals concentrated within a cavity of the dark matrix. The crystals display a clearly radiating, fan-like arrangement and stand out vividly against the surrounding rock. Individual crystal faces are well visible, even though some needles are intergrown. The crystalline nature is distinct and typical of fine Erythrite specimens from Bou Azzer.

Geology & Origin

Erythrite is a secondary cobalt arsenate that forms in the oxidation zones of cobalt-rich ore deposits. The Bou Azzer mining district in Morocco is one of the classic and most important localities worldwide for Erythrite. There, the crystals typically develop in fractures and cavities of arsenic- and cobalt-bearing rocks and are often associated with other secondary minerals.
