Descloizite and Calcite crystals from the Tsumeb Mine, Otavi Mountains, Namibia Ilse Baer collection– small cabinet specimen as unique piece

This miniature specimen with Descloizite and Calcite crystals from the Tsumeb Mine, Otavi Mountains, Namibia originates from the Ilse Baer collection and was collected before 1972 The specimen shows an attractive combination of dark, metallic Descloizite crystals and lighter Calcite crystals forming a striking mineral association.

The Descloizite crystals occur in dense, lustrous aggregates that form the darker portion of the specimen. Between these areas, transparent to whitish Calcite crystals are developed, adding structure and depth to the piece. Reddish brown coatings can also be observed locally, giving the specimen an especially vivid color contrast.

Geology & Origin

The Tsumeb Mine in the Otavi Mountains of Namibia is one of the world’s most important localities for secondary copper, lead and vanadium minerals. The exceptionally complex mineralization formed in a hydrothermally altered carbonate deposit and resulted in the formation of more than 300 different mineral species. Descloizite is a typical vanadate mineral of the oxidized zone of the deposit and commonly occurs together with carbonates such as Calcite.
