Deerite from Laytonville, CA, USA – miniature specimen as unique piece

 

This miniature specimen shows Deerite from Laytonville, California, USA. The piece appears as a dark gray to nearly black fragment with a metallic to silky luster and a distinctly fibrous to lamellar structure. The surface is compact and displays characteristic slightly oriented textures typical for this rare mineral.

Distinct individual crystals are not clearly visible, but the crystalline structure is evident through fine, parallel aggregates. These give the specimen a pronounced textured appearance and highlight the typical habit of Deerite.

Geology & Origin

Deerite is a rare iron silicate that forms under high grade metamorphic conditions. It typically occurs in iron rich metamorphic rocks and is often associated with minerals such as Quartz, Hematite or Magnetite.

The Laytonville locality in California is one of the classic occurrences of Deerite and is well known in mineralogy for this unusual mineral. Specimens like this are especially valued by collectors of metamorphic minerals.
