Datolite and Prehnite from Schnellbach, Thuringia, Germany; 1 kg
This position comprises 1 kg of datolite and prehnite from the classic locality of Schnellbach in Thuringia, Germany. The material shows the typical massive to crust-like formations of this paragenesis in whitish, grey to slightly greenish tones. Prehnite mainly occurs in compact, partly translucent aggregates, while datolite appears as light-colored, dense to glassy-looking material. The pieces are left in their natural rough state and are well suited as reference and collection material from a classic Central European locality. Texture and color distribution vary from piece to piece, making the position mineralogically diverse.
Geology & Origin
The Schnellbach locality in Thuringia is known for secondary calcium and boron silicates formed in hydrothermally influenced veins and fractures. Datolite and prehnite develop as typical associated minerals under low- to medium-temperature formation conditions and commonly occur together. The minerals crystallized from mineral-rich solutions penetrating the host rock, forming massive to crust-like aggregates. Schnellbach is considered a classic German locality for this mineral association and has long been appreciated by collectors.
