Cuprite crystals from Kolwezi, Shaba, Zaire, Gerd Tremmel collection – small cabinet specimen as unique piece

This small cabinet specimen from Kolwezi features dark Cuprite forms contrasting vividly with the pale green and mint-coloured areas of the surrounding matrix. The finely textured surfaces create a harmonious appearance and highlight the characteristic colour expression of this copper-rich mineral. An attractive piece originating from the former Gerd Tremmel collection.

Geology & Origin

Kolwezi, in the Shaba region (today Katanga, DR Congo), is one of the world’s most important copper–cobalt mining districts. Cuprite develops in the oxidised zones of copper deposits, where copper-bearing fluids interact with suitable host rocks. The colour variation and structural character of this specimen reflect the complex geochemical processes typical of ore formation within the Central African Copperbelt.
