This cabinet specimen presents a striking contrast between dark Coronadite and orange Wulfenite crystals. The fine-grained, gray-black matrix provides an excellent backdrop for the vivid splashes of Wulfenite. Particularly eye-catching are the localized orange zones, characteristic of the oxidation zone in this deposit.
Geology & Origin:
The Defiance Mine in Arizona is a classic locality for secondary lead minerals from the oxidation zone. Coronadite forms as a lead-bearing manganese oxide under oxidizing conditions, while Wulfenite precipitates as a lead molybdate from hydrothermal fluids. The co-occurrence of both minerals reflects complex geochemical processes within the oxidized environment.
