Chrysoprase from Indonesia. One unique specimen with approx. 4.52 kg.

This large chrysoprase specimen from Indonesia weighs approximately 4.52 kg and displays a varied coloration ranging from pale mint green and light green to almost whitish-green areas. Parts of the specimen are slightly translucent, while others appear more massive, with beige to rust-brown matrix zones and natural cavities throughout. Particularly striking are the broad green chrysoprase areas, which give the piece a relatively bright and lively appearance despite its substantial size. Its irregular natural shape, changing surface textures, and combination of chrysoprase and host rock make this a distinctive display specimen. The exact piece shown in the pictures is offered for sale.

Geology & Origin

Chrysoprase is a green variety of chalcedony and therefore belongs to the quartz group. Its characteristic green coloration is generally caused by small amounts of nickel-bearing compounds. The material commonly forms in connection with the weathering of nickel-rich ultramafic rocks, where silica-rich fluids can fill fractures, cavities and altered rock zones and precipitate chalcedony. Indonesia is one of the well-known sources of chrysoprase and produces material in a wide range of green and pastel tones, often with a noticeable proportion of natural matrix. Large rough specimens such as this one illustrate particularly well the relationship between the green chalcedony and its original host rock.

Usage Notes

Fossil wood with opal is ideal as a collector's specimen, decorative display piece or educational example. Clean with a soft, dry or slightly damp cloth. Avoid strong impacts and harsh cleaning agents to help preserve the specimen.
