Chloropal (Nontronite) from Fort Dauphin, Madagascar – 1 unique lot

This unique lot contains numerous pieces of Chloropal (Nontronite) from Fort Dauphin in Madagascar. The specimens show a distinctive yellow-green to olive-green colour and predominantly smooth to conchoidally fractured surfaces, locally with a slightly waxy lustre. The lot contains several larger pieces as well as numerous smaller fragments in different shapes and sizes. The complete lot shown in the pictures is offered as a unique lot.

Geology & Origin

Nontronite is an iron-rich clay mineral of the smectite group and typically forms through weathering or hydrothermal alteration of iron-rich rocks. The term Chloropal was historically used for greenish, opal-like material that is often associated with Nontronite. The material in this lot originates from the Fort Dauphin area in southern Madagascar, a region with diverse igneous and metamorphic rocks and associated weathering products.
