This position comprises 10 kg of basalt from the Rhön region in Germany. The material shows the typical fine-grained, compact texture of basalt in dark grey to black tones, with occasional visible mafic minerals such as augite or titanomagnetite that create subtle contrasts within the rock. The pieces are mostly massive in structure and are ideal as reference material for petrographic collections, educational use, or as a representative example of a classic volcanic rock from the Rhön area. The natural texture varies slightly from piece to piece yet remains consistently characteristic of this regional basalt facies.

Geology & Herkunft

Basalt is a mafic volcanic rock and a characteristic component of the Tertiary volcanic formations of the Rhön. It formed through the rapid solidification of basaltic lava that reached the surface during the volcanic activity of the Tertiary period in Central Europe. The mafic minerals contained in the rock reflect the mineralogical composition of the original melt and provide insight into the magmatic evolution of the Rhön volcanic province. The material is typical for the well-known rock localities in Bavaria and Hesse within this prominent volcanic field.
