Azurite Crystals and Malachite from Morocco, 1.5 kg Large Cabinet Specimen – Unique Piece
This large specimen shows intense deep-blue Azurite crystals and crystalline coatings distributed across broad areas of the brown to rusty-brown matrix. Vivid green Malachite occurs alongside the Azurite, creating a strong colour contrast. Particularly striking is the varied distribution of the blue and green mineralization across the wide surface of the specimen. Weighing approximately 1.5 kg, this is a substantial large cabinet specimen with a strong visual presence and numerous mineralogically interesting areas.
Geology & Origin
Azurite and Malachite are typical secondary copper minerals that form mainly in the oxidation zones of copper-rich deposits. In these environments, primary copper minerals react with oxygen-rich, carbon dioxide-bearing waters, allowing Azurite and Malachite to precipitate under suitable chemical conditions. Both minerals commonly occur together because their formation is closely related and the local conditions within a deposit can vary over very short distances. Morocco is well known for numerous important copper deposits that have produced colourful Azurite and Malachite specimens in a wide variety of forms. The combination of deep-blue Azurite, vivid green Malachite and iron-oxide-rich matrix is especially characteristic of such oxidized copper deposits.
