Azurite xls, Malachite; Morocco; large Cab; unique piece
Azurite Crystals and Malachite from Morocco, 3.2 kg Large Cabinet Specimen – Unique Piece
This very large specimen displays numerous deep-blue Azurite crystals and crystalline coatings on a brown to rusty-brown matrix. Contrasting green Malachite occurs between them in patches and crust-like areas across different parts of the surface. The mineralization extends over several sides of the specimen and includes both compact blue areas and finer scattered crystal aggregates. Weighing approximately 3.2 kg, this is a substantial large cabinet specimen with varied surfaces and mineralized zones that reveal different details from changing viewing angles.
Geology & Origin
Azurite and Malachite are typical secondary copper minerals of oxidized copper deposits. They form when primary copper-bearing minerals near the surface are chemically altered by oxygen- and carbon dioxide-bearing waters. Azurite and Malachite may occur directly beside one another because even relatively small variations in the chemical environment can influence which of the two carbonate minerals is preferentially formed. The intense blue of Azurite together with the vivid green of Malachite is highly characteristic of the oxidation zones of copper ore deposits. Morocco contains numerous well-known occurrences of secondary copper mineralization and has long been an important source of large Azurite and Malachite specimens.
