Artinite crystals from Staten Island, NY, USA– micromount as unique piece
Fine white Artinite crystals appear as acicular aggregates on grey matrix. The typical radiating formation of this rare carbonate is clearly visible under magnification. Despite its small size, this specimen offers an aesthetic and collectible example of this uncommon mineral from an unusual East Coast locality.
Geology & origin
Artinite is a rare hydrous magnesium carbonate that typically forms in hydrothermally altered rocks. On Staten Island, it was discovered in old serpentinite deposits where it crystallized in cavities. Such finds are rarely documented and usually originate from historic collections or targeted microparagenetic studies.
