Agate (rare!) from Appenrode near Nordhausen in Thuringia, Germany – 1 unique half size flat
This rare collection includes several polished and unpolished agates from the locality near Appenrode in Thuringia. The specimens display a wide range of banding, colors, and internal structures – from fine grey layers and vibrant red and orange tones to nearly black, opaque sections. Some pieces have been cut or ground to reveal the typical concentric texture characteristic of agate.
The deposit at Appenrode is known among collectors but remains relatively undocumented and difficult to access. Agate is a banded variety of chalcedony (cryptocrystalline SiO₂), typically forming in cavities of volcanic rocks. Specimens from Thuringia are especially valued for their rarity and regional significance. This flat offers a unique glimpse into the color and pattern diversity of these uncommon German agates.
