Mimetesite and Dolomite crystals from the Tsumeb Mine, Otavi Mountains, Namibia – miniature specimen as unique piece
This miniature specimen shows Mimetesite and Dolomite crystals from the Tsumeb Mine in Namibia and was collected before 1981. The piece stands out with its intense coloration and the attractive combination of different crystal forms.
The Mimetesite crystals display bright yellow to orange colors and are well formed. They show prismatic partially transparent crystals with sharp faces and a distinct luster. These are set on a Dolomite matrix which appears in light white to beige crystal aggregates providing a calm contrasting background. The crystals are clearly recognizable creating a vivid and highly aesthetic overall appearance.
Geology & Origin
Mimetesite is a secondary lead arsenate chloride mineral forming in the oxidation zone of lead deposits. It is well known for its strong colors and well developed crystals.
Dolomite is a common carbonate mineral frequently occurring as an associated mineral in hydrothermal deposits where it can serve as a matrix for secondary minerals.
The Tsumeb Mine in the Otavi Mountains is one of the most important mineral localities in the world. Its complex geochemical evolution resulted in the formation of an exceptional variety of minerals often showing excellent crystal development and vivid colors.
