Fossilized (petrified) wood - opal; Garut, Java, Indonesia; 9.85 kg; unique piece
Fossilized (petrified) wood from Garut, Java, Indonesia – 9.85 kg unique piece
This fossilized wood specimen from Garut presents an impressive combination of natural matrix and extensively exposed silicified interior. The polished surface reveals deep green to olive zones with translucent areas reminiscent of agate, creating a striking contrast with the light-colored outer matrix.
Darker inclusions and cloudy internal structures run through the silica mass, still reflecting the former organic texture of the wood. Its elongated shape gives the piece a dynamic appearance, making it an excellent decorative collector’s specimen with strong aesthetic presence.
Geology & Origin
Fossilized wood forms when organic plant material is permeated and preserved by mineral-rich solutions over very long geological timescales. During this process, the original wood substance is gradually replaced by quartz and related silicates, while the internal structure of the wood remains intact. The Garut region on Java is well known for producing large-format, vividly colored fossilized wood characterized by stable preservation, clear structures, and expressive natural color zoning.
