Fossilized (petrified) wood; Garut, Java, Indonesia; 5 kg; unique piece
Fossilized (petrified) wood from Garut, Java, Indonesia – 5 kg unique piece
This striking fossilized wood specimen displays a clearly defined cross section with concentric growth zones. A bright central core is surrounded by darker brown and olive tones. The polished-looking cut surface enhances the natural pattern and creates a pronounced sense of depth.
The outer portion remains largely embedded in a light sedimentary matrix, making the contrast between original host rock and silicified wood particularly visible. The well-defined growth rings and harmonious color zoning give the piece a calm yet expressive appearance.
Geology & Origin
Fossilized wood forms when organic plant material is permeated and preserved by mineral-rich solutions over very long geological timescales. During this process, the original wood substance is gradually replaced by quartz and related silicates, while the internal structure of the wood remains intact. The Garut region on Java is well known for producing large-format, vividly colored fossilized wood characterized by stable preservation, clear structures, and expressive natural color zoning.
