Fossilized (petrified) wood from Garut, Java, Indonesia – 4.24 kg unique piece

This compact fossilized wood specimen displays a striking combination of natural matrix and clearly silicified core zones. A vertically running, greenish translucent band distinctly cuts through the piece and contrasts with the surrounding beige-brown areas.

Partially smoother, slightly glossy surfaces contrast with rougher sedimentary sections, creating an appealing structural interplay between original embedding and mineral replacement. Subtle color transitions from olive green to brown and light cream tones give the specimen a vivid yet harmonious overall appearance.

Geology & Origin

Fossilized wood forms when organic plant material is permeated and preserved by mineral-rich solutions over very long geological timescales. During this process, the original wood substance is gradually replaced by quartz and related silicates, while the internal structure of the wood remains intact. The Garut region on Java is well known for producing large-format, vividly colored fossilized wood characterized by stable preservation, clear structures, and expressive natural color zoning.
