Phenakite, Fluorite, Scheelite (UV!); Mount Wheeler Mine, White Pine County, Nevada, USA; 100 kg
This 100 kg lot comes from the Mount Wheeler Mine in Nevada and features pieces with varying amounts of Scheelite, Fluorite, and occasionally Phenakite. Under UV light, these materials show attractive effects: Scheelite typically fluoresces a bright blue-white, while Fluorite may glow greenish to bluish depending on its composition. Phenakite can be present as fine-grained or massive beryllium silicate, though it generally does not show notable UV reaction. The pieces vary in color, texture, and fluorescence intensity, making them appealing for collectors of fluorescent minerals as well as for educational and decorative use.
Geology & Origin
The Mount Wheeler Mine is located in White Pine County within the Great Basin region of the USA. The deposit is part of a metasomatically altered ore system that developed in contact zones between carbonate and silicate rocks. Scheelite occurs as a primary tungsten ore in quartz veins and as a replacement mineral in limestone. Fluorite is a common accessory mineral, while Phenakite, a rare beryllium mineral, is typically found associated with quartz and sericite. The pronounced UV fluorescence, especially of Scheelite and Fluorite, makes this material an eye-catching UV mineral.
