Green Opal from Java, Indonesia. 1 kg
This 1 kg lot contains rough pieces of green opal in varying sizes and shapes. The specimens display a deep green coloration, partly with brownish matrix inclusions and lighter zones. The material is natural, showing fresh fracture surfaces, and is suitable for cutting and polishing as well as for decorative collector’s use.
Geology & Origin
Green opal from the Indonesian island of Java forms in association with volcanic processes. Opal is an amorphous, hydrous silica that develops through the deposition of silica gels in rock cavities. In the deposits of Central Java, these occurrences are often related to basaltic host rocks. The distinctive green color is caused by mineral inclusions, most commonly nickel or iron. Indonesian opal is internationally valued for its wide color spectrum and versatility in lapidary work.
